The Department of History started its journey in 1973 as general subject and continued ahead for more than a decade until it obtained approval for Honours courses in 1988. The primary objective of the department is to prepare and tune the undergraduate students with the updated knowledge of History following thoroughly the syllabus provided by the Dibrugarh University for today’s contemporary competitive environment in view the needs the state in particular and the nation in general. There are at present four full time teachers as well as sixty intake capacity for Honours students.
Besides teaching, the Department organizes class wise seminar, debates, quiz competition and group discussion, so that they can keep pace with the time. The students can express their views independently through their writings in the well maintained Departmental wall magazine- Istoria and teachers guide them properly in this regard. To acquaint with knowledge of the past, the Department also organises periodical educational tour to different places of historical importance. A mini museum under the initiative of the Department is also in process inside the central library of the college. As part of academic and research activities, it has been organizing seminars, workshops and lectures by distinguish resource persons from reputed institutions.
The department aims to sign MoU with various educational institutes in order to achieve excellence in pursuit of knowledge in History as well as excel the overall career of the students in History. The faculty members are always promising to render all possible assistance and guidance to students within and outside the campus as and when required.
Till date, the Department has produced a good number of students both Honours as well as General courses throughout the years. Many students of the Department have established themselves in various sectors and keep touch with the Department as alumni.
