The policy of the Grievance Redressal Committee Jengraimukh College, Majuli

The redressal of students’ grievances is an important area that helps to ensure a safe, regulated and tuneful teaching-learning environment at all higher educational institutions. A grievance redressal system is a process to address employee grievances, and it can be defined as a mechanism that enables employees to communicate their concerns to management. Considering its utmost priority, the Jengraimukh College, Majuli has constituted a Grievance Redressal Committee to look into issues or complaints lodged by the students and staff. The College has also constituted Anti-Ragging Committee and Anti-Sexual Harassment Cell to decentralise the redressal process and proactively deal with specific cases. All the Committees have been constituted by the guidelines of the UGC or the respective authority. Objectives of Grievance redressal committee Grievance redressal committees are formed to provide a platform for students to address their issues and get them resolved. The committees are required to handle students’ grievances and provide a speedy resolution.

In general, the objectives of these committees are:

  1. To ensure that students get a prompt solution to their problems.
  2. To ensure harmonious student-faculty relationships.
  3. To provide a platform for essential communications and bridge the communication gap related to various academic matters.
  4. To provide a platform for students to express their grievances freely and ensure that they would be handled without biases.

Grievance Redressal typically covers the following types of complaints:

  1. Service Unavailability
  2. Excessive Delays in duty
  3. Injustice concerns viz., caste, sex etc.
  4. Staff Misbehaviour
  5. Malpractice
  6. Complaints lodged by students and staff.

The purpose of handling grievances in academic areas, the college has the following committees

C. Examination committee

D. Non-Academic Matters

A. Admission Grievance Redressal Mechanism

The college ensures that the grievances/complaints of students are handled promptly for necessary action. The nature of admission-related grievances includes:

  1. Irregularity in the admission process adopted by the college
  2. Not having relevant certificates
  3. Information furnished in the prospectus that might seem false or misleading
  4. A breach in reservation policy in admission as applicable.
  5. Issues of clarity relating to admission in various cut-offs.

B. Internal Assessment Grievance Redressal Mechanism

Jengraimukh College in sync with the Dibrugarh University directions follows all the guidelines to ensure that the process of continuous assessment is efficient and in the best interest of students. The nature of grievances includes:

  1. The Internal Assessment-related grievances include.
  2. Incorrect uploading of Internal Assessment marks.
  3. Late submission of assignment.
  4. Non-submission of assignments due to medical issues, family emergency or academic/ non-academic event participation.
  5. Any other.

C. Examination Grievance Redressal Mechanism

The college has an examination committee that is responsible and accountable for handling all examination-related issues. This committee comprises academic-in-charge and administrative-in-charge officers who act as a connecting link between students and the university. The committee deals with examination-related grievances of the following nature:

  1. Matters related to students found using unfair means.
  2. Non-transparent or unfair evaluation practices.
  3. A student is wrongly marked absent in the result.
  4. Any other.

D. Non-Academic Matters

Grievances related to non-academic matters are taken care of, such as:

  1. Issues related to indiscipline.
  2. Issues related to ragging.
  3. Issues related to sexual harassment.
  4. Issues related to gender discrimination.
  5. Issues related to infrastructure and facilities.

Policy Formulation and Implementation Any student or staff with a genuine grievance or complaint may approach the Grievance Redressal Committee. Anyone can register their complaints verbally by appearing before any member of the committee or by writing a complaint. Furthermore, on receiving the complaints, a preliminary discussion among members of the committee about the merit of the issue or complaint is judged. The Committee formally meets to review the cases and if required, send them to the higher authority for direction and guidance. The cases are attended to promptly on receipt of the grievances from the students and staff.

The Grievance Redressal Committee constitutes a core committee in the college that deals with students and staff’s grievances and their redressal. Prompt and timely action on the issues or grievances will help to build the confidence of different stakeholders in the institution and in the long run, it will ensure a healthy teaching-learning environment in the institution.
