The lone educational institution throwing open the portal to higher education to the populace of Missing, Deori, and Xonowal Kochari tribes inhabiting the riparian region of the river Luit Kherkatia is the Jengraimukh College. The college was established on 23rd of May 1973. The department of Economics is one of the 7 departments (subjects), which was started from the beginning of the college with the singular objective of helping the students from the downtrodden in broadening their horizons through the study of economics. Initially, the subject of Economics was offered as one of the core subjects right from the higher secondary to degree level and the department of economics boasts that the honours course was introduced as early as the year 1979 with the duo of full-fledged faculty members namely Sri Padmadhar Pegu(HOD) and Late Thaneswar Goswami. The honours course is still running full steam ahead.
Recently the department introduced an Add on Course on “Organic Farming” affiliated by Dibrugarh University for the better interest of the student community and society as a whole.
The department also signed an MOU with both the Department of Economics, Majuli College and the Department of Economics, UMK College for the exchange of faculty and student to improve the educational environment, explore ways to cooperate in education and training, Exchange academic materials and information, improving cooperation and innovative ideas among students etc.
